The Mountain State's history, industry, and culture are each greatly impacted by the mountainous terrain upon which it sits. It is the only state that is entirely within Appalachia — the area served by the Appalachian Regional Commission.
Originally a part of Virginia (and a part of several land disputes), West Virginia broke away on its own and was admitted to the Union on June 20th, 1863. The 35th state is one of two states admitted during the Civil War (also Nevada).
