The National League of Families POW/ MIA Flag

You Are Not Forgotten

U.S. Grant in Capitol Rotunda with POW/MIA flag

The POW/MIA flag was born of a need — a need to recognize the enormous sacrifice of those Americans who have been captured and held by enemy forces or whose condition is unconfirmed. Furthermore, the POW/ MIA flag serves as a reminder to every American living here at home to continue to strive to account for our POWs and MIA men and women, as well as to lend our emotional support to their families.

Visibility is Its Value

The purpose of the POW/ MIA flag is to increase awareness of the plight of those veterans of the United States Armed Forces who have not returned or been returned home following an overseas conflict. The POW/ MIA flag is the only flag to be flown in place of the American flag over the White House — having been flown there on National POW/ MIA Recognition Day every year since 1982.

Civilians are encouraged to fly the POW/ MIA flag alongside their American flags throughout the year, but especially on specific days of recognition, including National POW/ MIA Recognition Day.

A Message in the Design

The POW/MIA flag features a silhouette of a prisoner of war in front of a guard tower and barbed-wire. The eternal message, "You are not forgotten," spans the lower portion of the image. The original design is black and white, though other iterations exist — a testament to the flag's national and international acceptance as a symbol of vigilance and recognition of all prisoners of war and personnel missing in action.

Why LIBERTY FLAGS' POW/MIA Flags?

LIBERTY FLAGS, The American Wave® POW/MIA Flags are made from premium quality materials and are produced entirely in the United States. The flags are made from 200 denier nylon fabric and the original POW/ MIA artwork is printed using a precise screen-dyeing process that reproduces finely-detailed commercial military designs in brilliant color. The flag is secured to a strong canvas heading with brass grommets, and double-needle hems on the upper and lower fly lengths connect to the four-needle lock-stitched hem on fly end.
